Put Down the Whip

A song about Seriousness as Identification

Story: The Man Who Worked at Resting

Verse 1

He made his rest a project
he made his art a test
he made a job of breathing
and a schedule for his chest
he carried all his practice
like a ladder and a stone
trying to be worthy
in a room he called his own

Chorus

Put down the whip
the horse still knows the road
put down the weight
you were never meant to hold
the work will move through lightly
when it isn’t proof of you
put down the whip
and see what life can do

Verse 2

He thought that if he loosened
everything would fall apart
the songs would stop their singing
and the fire would leave the heart
but the morning opened gently
and no order had to come
then the body chose a bicycle
and the day began to hum

Bridge

Seriousness says
I must become
I must be seen
I must get done
but under that armour
the living thing plays
making and moving
in ordinary ways

Final Chorus

Put down the whip
the horse still knows the road
put down the story
of the necessary load
nothing here is wasted
nothing needs your proof
put down the whip
and let the doing loose
