When Thought Says Me

A song about Is the sense of self discontinuous?

33..Story: Between Thoughts

Verse 1
I was waiting for the kettle
Morning light across the floor
Birdsong from the open window
Nothing missing, nothing more
Then a thought came in and named it
Pulled a centre out of steam
And all at once there I was again
The one inside the scene

Pre-Chorus
But where was I
Before the claim?
Before the mind
Spoke up my name?

Chorus
When thought says me
A world appears
A subject here
An object there
A life to hold
A pain to own
A self that feels
Like it has always been alone
But in the gaps
Between the seams
There’s only living
Before thought says me

Verse 2
I watched the mind all afternoon
Making Daniel out of air
“I remember,” “I am worried,”
“I should go,” “I ought to care”
Each small sentence drew a border
Each opinion made a face
Then the thought would fade and with it
Went the centre of the place

Pre-Chorus
Not gone forever
Not fully through
Just coming, going
Like weather do

Chorus
When thought says me
A world appears
A subject here
An object there
A life to hold
A pain to own
A self that feels
Like it has always been alone
But in the gaps
Between the seams
There’s only living
Before thought says me

Bridge
Maybe self is not a thing
Maybe self is what thought brings
A little knot, a little name
A repeated spark, a borrowed flame
And all the while the birds still call
Light still moves across the wall
Life goes on without asking who
Needs to stand behind the view

Final Chorus
When thought says me
The story starts
With all its lines
And all its parts
But when it fades
What still remains
Is sound and colour, wind and rain
And something free
From what it seems
Still quietly here
Before thought says me

Outro
So let the mind
Say what it will
I do not need
To make it still
I only see
More clearly now
How often self
Is just a thought said out loud
